The Nets Are Going Up
The nets are going up on our vines to protect the 2015 vintage from the birds. It is another step toward harvest, and the countdown clock has begun.
What was expected to be an early harvest, no longer is, thanks to the cool July days we saw.
The nets are typically installed when véraison, meaning “the onset of ripening”, occurs and the grapes change color. This coincides with the increase in sugar and the decrease in acid within the grape, and the consequent change in aroma to sweetness, which attracts animals and birds. Birds peck at the grapes, sometimes releasing juices that could encourage mold and disease to form.
